After being found guilty of age-cheating, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) women's Under-17 football team were issued a fine and banned from competition. The GFA has confirmed that it will appeal both of these penalties.
Ghana was caught lying about their age on Monday, and as a result, they were fined $100,000 and told they couldn't play in the next two FIFA U17 Women's African Qualifiers.
Moroccan authorities made a complaint that Nancy Amoh and Rasheeda Shahadu of Black Maidens lied about their ages and are older than the minimum age requirement of 17.
Here is the complete statement issued by the GFA:
"Following the decision of the CAF Disciplinary Committee, the GFA has today formally written to CAF to express its intentions to appeal against the CAF Disciplinary Decision to the CAF Appeals Board," the letter reads. "The CAF Appeals Board will hear the appeal."
""The Ghana Football Association has stated that it is prepared to challenge the decision that the CAF Disciplinary Committee made regarding two U17 players."
Because of this, the GFA has met the requirements of Article 58 of the CAF Disciplinary Code and paid the fees needed to file an appeal. "Within the additional seven (7) days allowed by Article 55 of the CAF Disciplinary Code, the GFA will send the Statement of case of Appeal detailing the reasons for the Appeal,"
