On Wednesday, President Nana Akufo-Addo officially opened the first 45 of the 100 VDL Intercity buses that the Metro Mass Transit Limited had purchased.
The event, according to President Akufo-Addo, is noteworthy in particular because it has given the nation the chance to expand the capacity of the public transportation system.
As the President of the Republic, I have made it a priority to re-launch the Metro Mass Transport system throughout the regional capitals via continued investments in infrastructure and services since having an effective transportation system is essential to the growth of the economy.
"The Minister for Transport informs me that this initiative is being conducted in phases, with the first phase including the acquisition of a total of 100 buses, as well as after-sales services support and enough spare parts to repair about 50 broken down buses," he stated.
The President further mentioned that technical help is also being given to the firm in the shape of an operating grant from the Belgian government to cover driver and maintenance staff training.
President Akufo-Addo expressed his thanks to the Belgian government for supplying the buses with both financial and technical help, noting that the two countries have a long-standing relationship that has resulted in several strategic collaborations in important industries.
In reality, 513 VDL intercity buses were provided to Metro Mass Transit Ltd. through concessionary finance from the Belgian government while John Agyekum Kufuor served as the second president of the 4th Republic, a remarkable leader from Ghana.
"I have learned that the Belgian government is providing another another concessionary loan for the firm to purchase 50 buses year for the next five years, expanding the fleet even further. I urge all players to work diligently as we attempt to completely reform the operations of MMTL since this is very timely, he stated.
President Akufo-Addo lamented the mistreatment and neglect of public resources, which, regrettably, has eroded Ghana's social fabric, and echoed the remarks of the minister of transportation.
constitutes a significant strain on the country's resources.
"As a result, I kindly want the Board and Management to take action to make sure that these buses, which I am putting into service today, endure over time. It is encouraging to see that Metro Mass Transit Ltd. is recovering its position as a vital supplier of public transportation services that is committed to serving the people of Ghana, the President said.
