Looking down while sitting at the changeovers, Nadal looked lost, approaching the mentor toward the finish of a third set that he gave to Fritz when he sent a forehand wide. He sat down for a brief moment to talk with the mentor yet no treatment, simply shaking his head prior to making a beeline for the gauge.
Nadal was broken multiple times in the match, his serve habitually 25mph more slow than that of his rival, yet he held it to very much want to take the fourth set and power a decider that had looked so far-fetched on occasion.
This was an update that this is one of his game's unequaled greats and whose battling soul is his brand name.
Nadal had break focuses at 3-3 in the fifth, one of which was saved by a brutal net rope, before he at last changed over the fourth with a fragile forehand drop shot.
Yet, Fritz, who had beaten Nadal recently in the Indian Wells last, answered splendidly with a quick crush spirit and hold to leave the Spaniard remaining in the match as the timed ticked beyond four hours.
