Labor co-ordinator Boakye Yiadom urged the government to consider firing teachers if their unions refused to listen to reasons during negotiations to end their strike.

Four teachers' unions including the Ghana National Association of Teachers, the National Association of Graduate Teachers, the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana, and the Teacher, and the Educational Workers Union are on strike over non-payment of 20% of the Cost of Living (COLA). ) the benefits they sought from the government.

On Wednesday, July 6, 2022, the Union leadership met with the Department of Employment and Labor Relations to discuss the way forward but unfortunately the meeting ended incorrectly.

Speaking to Asaase Radio in an interview, Labor Consultant Boakye Yiadom shared concerns about the state of teaching and learning in pre-secondary schools due to the teachers' strike.

He said if he did it his way he would fire a majority of all teachers who were not ready to relax the COLA 20% proposal given the current state of affairs in the country.

“Negotiations follow a process. So you can’t just jump in, especially, if you know that your institution is running its own power in its own budget and the budget is made every year. My view would be, let's discuss the problems when you think we can consider inflation trends in 2022 to determine your earnings.

"For me, if the unions insist that if I stay in that position as chairperson it will be discussed I will be looking at mass dismissals. Because you can't bring the whole nation to something illegal. Everyone is going through a difficult time, ”said Boakye Yiadom.

Teachers' unions announced their permanent national strike on Monday, July 4, 2022.

The union leadership after meeting with the Department of Employment and Labor Relations on Wednesday agreed to hold further talks but stressed that the strike would continue until the demands of the members were met.
