Dr. Leticia Adelaide Appiah, Executive Director, National Executive Council, says that in 2021 Ghana recorded 1,053,400 births and 288,378 deaths.

This means that every year, the world averages over 700,000 newborns.

Dr. Appiah made the remarks at a media briefing in Accra on International Census Day on July 11, 2022.

The Executive Director said the United Nations World Population Prospects had recorded 139, 821, 086 births and 60, 119,439 deaths worldwide by 2021.

He pointed out that Europe had 4,047,432 births and 5,186,787 deaths, while Africa had 49,034,104 births and 13,378,591.

"While Europe has played a key role in reducing population growth to a sustainable level, Africa is contributing to its rapid and sustainable growth," he said.

Dr. Appiah said population growth in Africa and Ghana was partly due to the high rate of teenage pregnancy, child marriage, and the unreachable need for family planning and social and economic costs.

He called on leaders to prioritize reproductive health rights and the choice of all, especially girls and women, to reduce population growth to a sustainable level.

Dr. Appiah said: "Prioritizing rights and choices means providing everyone with adequate information on reproductive health and services so that it is easier to make informed decisions in their choice of offspring for the benefit of themselves and the health of others."

"This will not only reduce population growth in Africa and Ghana but will also address inequalities in health, education, employment, and gender equality, which are essential conditions for sustainable development."

He said child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and the unmet need for family planning put a strain on the family and the nation's income while increasing family and country costs especially in the misuse of the product and production.

Dr. Appiah called for a concerted effort by all stakeholders to reduce or eliminate child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and unplanned family planning.

He said reproductive health policy should be seen as an economic and security policy to ensure the country's sustainable development.

Mr. Barnabas Yisa, Representative of the United Nations Fund for the People's Fund of Ghana, urged the public to be well informed and educated about the need for human life.

He said a country with a stable population would improve the quality of life of its people and improve the quality of education, health, and welfare.

World Population Day is an annual event celebrated on July 11 every year, aimed at raising awareness of the world's problems.

The day aims to raise awareness of various human tissues, such as the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, and human rights.
