Barcelona have been hit with a fresh challenge as the club reportedly cannot register their new signings Franck Kessie and Andres Christiansen. Over the last few years, it has been no secret that the Catalan club has been struggling financially, to the point they had to release the most iconic player in their history, Lionel Messi.
Barca’s urgent need to free up the club’s wage bill will likely see them part ways with some key players, with Frenkie De Jong being courted by Manchester United. Regardless, the club is still determined to remain competitive, hence some big name additions to the squad, including Kessie and Christiansen.
Despite the fact that Barcelona acquired the duo on free transfers from AC Milan and Chelsea respectively, there is still the issue of a wage cap.
According to Cope, Barcelona cannot afford to register any new players as the club is still above their wage cap. Recently, Barcelona sold part of their TV rights to an outside company, a move which helped them with a £200 million cash boost.
Those funds, however, cannot be used to acquire new players, and the club will have to use the funds to balance the books from last season. Despite their financial plight, the 2015 Champions League winners still managed to secure the signings of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ferran Torres and Adama Traore (on loan) in January. At the moment, the club is fairly stable, having released Dani Alves and Phillipe Coutinho, while Ousmanne Dembele’s contract with the club has officially run down.
As far as transfers are concerned, Barca are still looking to bolster their defence, and Ajax star Nicholas Tagliafico has emerged as another top target for the Spanish giants. Marcos Alonso is the preferred player for Barcelona, but the Catalan club is unsure Chelsea will let go of the Spaniard in time.
