Previous Liverpool return comments from Luis Suarez as he outlines new transfer plans

The veteran Uruguayan striker is a free agent after his two-year contract with Atletico Madrid expired this summer, and he has provided an update on his next move.

After leaving Atletico Madrid to become a free agent, Luis Suarez has provided an update on his future.

The Uruguayan striker joined Los Rojiblancos from Barcelona in the summer of 2020, and his goals helped Diego Simeone's team win the league title in his first season. Suarez scored 21 goals in La Liga as Atletico won their first league title in seven years, but both the striker and the team struggled to replicate that form last season.

The war hero Uruguayan striker, who has been linked to a number of clubs as a free agent this summer, is best known in English football for his three-and-a-half year spell at Liverpool between 2011 and 2014, during which he scored 82 goals in 133 appearances before moving on to Barcelona.

Suarez has now provided an update on his future, revealing that he was considering a move to Argentine giants River Plate, but that this move fell through due to the club's elimination from the Copa Libertadores - South America's version of the Champions League.

"I was very excited about the prospect of going to River Plate to compete for the Copa Libertadores," Suarez said. "Winning a cup in South America was a dream of mine." However, once River was eliminated, that possibility vanished.

"I declared a month and a half ago that I was not leaving Europe, but River insisted so strongly that I began to consider it." You will think about whatever you say when the time comes. You're overjoyed that they adore you so much. A player must be shown affection. River was offering it to me, and Nacional (Suarez's former Uruguayan club) could have done the same."

Staying in La Liga is a possibility for the striker, who has previously expressed interest in returning to English football and, more specifically, Liverpool. Suarez previously stated: "Playing for any team other than Liverpool in England would be difficult."

"I had a very good relationship with Liverpool fans, and I hope I still do, that it would be strange for me to play for someone else." It would have been incredible to win the league with Liverpool, but I am relieved that their wait is over.

"They appear to be a team that will compete for many seasons to come, even if this one has not been their best." They've returned to their rightful place. I've missed the audience. The atmosphere is incredible, it's incredible. Everyone who has played for Liverpool understands how important the fans are. They are aware that they are in my thoughts."

Suarez scored just 12 goals in 41 La Liga and Champions League appearances last season.
