Lionel Messi will be hoping to help Argentina win the World Cup for the first time since Diego Maradona led the team to victory in 1986. Lionel Messi came close to winning the World Cup in 2014, but Argentina lost the finals 1-0 to Germany; he was named the tournament's best player.

Lionel Messi will play in his fifth FIFA World Cup, following appearances in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018.

1. Lionel Messi will be the youngest player in FIFA World Cup history, at 35 years old, breaking the record previously held by Gigi Buffon, Antonio Carbajal, Rafael Marquez, and Lothar Mattaus.

2. Lionel Messi will become Argentina's first player to appear in five World Cup tournaments, surpassing Diego Maradona and Javier Mascherano's four appearances.

3. Lionel Messi will surpass Javier Mascherano and Diego Maradona as the Argentine international with the most FIFA World Cup appearances, having already played 19 times.

Lionel Messi has captained Argentina in 12 World Cup matches; if Argentina advances to the Quarterfinals, he will break Diego Maradona's record for most World Cup matches played as captain.

5. If Lionel Messi scores four goals in the FIFA World Cup, he will become Argentina's all-time leading scorer.

6. If Argentina advances to the World Cup semi-finals, Lionel Messi will break Lothar Matthaus' record of 25 FIFA World Cup appearances.

7. If Argentina makes the finals, Lionel Messi could break Paolo Maldini's world cup record for most minutes played. Lionel Messi has 1,624 minutes of playing time, while Maldini has 2217 minutes.
