By taking up Manchester United's tiresome pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong during the summer transfer window, Chelsea might shatter their hearts. The 25-year-old has been at the center of United's summer business, but it wouldn't be the first time the Blues have the upper hand over them.
According to Spanish media, De Jong's move to Old Trafford is still being held up by complex roadblocks, thus Chelsea is reportedly doing "everything" to confirm its interest in him. Additionally, Barcelona may decide to work with the west London club rather than United given that they are interested in Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso.
De Jong is also hesitant to give up Champions League soccer if he is compelled to leave Camp Nou. Chelsea can provide that as opposed to United. Are Chelsea going to hand the Red Devils their most recent piece of transfer heartache and deny Erik ten Hag his top target as a result?
Express Sport focuses on SEVEN players Due to Chelsea's late hijacks, United has just barely missed out.
Robben Arjen (2004)
2004, when 19-year-old Arjen Robben traveled to London to visit Sir Alex Ferguson, he was thrilled by what he heard: "It would be amazing if I could play for Manchester [United]." However, a late Chelsea offer defeated United's, and PSV Eindhoven handled that trade on top of everything else. Before joining Real Madrid, he contributed to the Blues' back-to-back Premier League championships.
Drogba Didier (2004)
United was also irritated by Chelsea in 2004 about Didier Drogba. Before their Premier League rivals once again stole a march, Ferguson was preparing a move for the legendary Ivorian. "We went to Marseille to check him out, but the club wanted £25 million,Ferguson bemoaned in one of his memoirs, "and Chelsea moved in for the kill before we had made up our minds.
Obi Mikel John (2006)
possibly not the biggest name, but the most outrageous hijack... Two years later, John Obi Mikel not only consented to sign with United, but also did so before Chelsea came calling. In order to allow the midfielder to join, the Blues paid United £12 million to dissolve their contract at the same time that they agreed to the trade with Lyn Oslo.
Anelka, Nicolas (2008)
It appears that Chelsea got inspiration from Stephen King's IT, which haunts the small town of Derry in the transfer market every two years. Nicolas Anelka, another highly regarded striker, is the target this time. The Frenchman informed Bolton Wanderers personnel in January 2008 that he anticipated signing a contract with Old Trafford, only to conclude a £15 million transfer to Chelsea a few days later.
Theo Hazard (2012)
Before completing an £89 million transfer to Real Madrid, Eden Hazard grew at Chelsea into one of the best wingers in Premier League history. However, a conversation with Roman Abramovich shattered United's expectations, despite his admission that he was in "advanced conversations with both teams and coaches." "I chatted with Abramovich; he is really basic and loves football," Hazard remarked at the time. Chelsea and United were in a fight, but in my opinion, Chelsea has the greatest project.
Pedro (2015)
For United supporters, this is undoubtedly among the least upsetting examples on the list. Ed Woodward traveled to Barcelona in 2015 to finalize a deal for Pedro, but the Spanish player's representative alleged that the Red Devils "fell asleep" during negotiations. Woodward was renowned for always being trustworthy, of course. The late entry of Chelsea to seal a £21 million transaction may be repeated this summer by new owner Todd Boehly at Camp Nou. A much worse repetition.
