The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, describes the potential of the local textile industry as “immense.”

He said through employment programs and reforms, the British Government was supporting the Government of Ghana to transform the major economic sectors including textiles and textiles.

The Commissioner made the remarks during a visit to Volta Star Textile Limited in Juapong in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region as part of his working tour of the District.

He said the British government was providing funding to create a sound policy environment and drive investment that would see those sectors do their best.

He said this was important to create jobs, create wealth for the country, and prevent unemployment to improve the quality of life.

He noted that his team had been instrumental in leading a discussion that would identify potential investors in the firm, helping to organize the funding accordingly so that the firm could return to its former glory.

"I am a fan of African textiles," he said, and described the factory visit as "attractive," emphasizing that his garment would do everything possible to help revitalize the factory.

Madam Thompson noted that relations between the United Kingdom and Ghana were deep and historic and that the British Government was investing in the country's health sector.

Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a Member of Parliament for the area, commended Madam Thompson for choosing the region to visit and for her interest in helping to renovate the factory.

He said the factory had a dark shadow as it currently employs more than 700 people compared to more than 2000 when it was at its highest level and said this was a significant decrease.

The Member of Parliament has revealed that not even 50% of the 65 hectares of arable land has been used for factory purposes, which is why we still have a lot of room for expansion.

He said about the African Continental Free Trade, where Africa wants to create industries, empower the youth, and create jobs, it is important that they pay attention to existing industries, revitalize and expand.

Mr. Ablakwa hopes that the partnership with the Commission will go a long way in achieving the company's capacity to create jobs for people inside and outside the region.

He commended the Commissioner for his love and support for the vulnerable, saying "I have seen clearly as a Member of Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, that the High Commissioner is kind and genuinely concerned about those at risk."

Mr. Jerome Kwaku Dunyo, Acting CEO of the company, also commended the Chief Commissioner for visiting the industry, saying it was a good fortune for them.

He said the government was making efforts to find private investors to partner with and use the factory's equipment to operate more efficiently and welcomed the commission's decision to visit the factory to see how it could help revitalize it.
