George Mireku Duker, the deputy minister for lands and natural resources in charge of mining, has revealed the government's intention to cultivate "local champions" in the sector.

He asserts that it is the goal of the Akufo-Addo-led administration to guarantee that Ghanaian businesspeople control the mining sector.

According to him, doing so will result in the sector's money being kept domestically, which will boost the economy of Ghana.

"Since the big mining companies are all controlled by foreigners, a substantial portion of the profit is transferred to each nation. This is the reason President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has raised the idea of cultivating mining industry titans in Ghana, he added.

This was said by Mr. Mireku Duker during the opening of a community mining project in the Eastern Region's Atiwa West constituency at Asamang-Tamfoe.

He said that mining regulations like the Community Mining Scheme are intended to increase Ghanaian involvement in the sector, which will eventually produce local champions.

He urged local investors to take advantage of the government's initiative and contribute to the growth of the mining sector by engaging in ethical mining.

Hon. Duker believes that the government's acquisition of gold katchas to replace the use of mercury in mining is another sign of its strong support for the small-scale mining industry.

We must mine responsibly, therefore this is crucial. The dangerous use of mercury was recently replaced by the outdooring of 100 mercury-free machines by President Akufo-Addo. Additionally, he has acquired speedboats to aid in protecting our river systems from unauthorised mining, the man claimed.

He encouraged the traditional chiefs to help the government battle unlawful mining by disclosing those who do it.

The security services have been ordered by the deputy minister to detain anyone discovered to be mining without a permit from the Minerals Commission.

The local chief praised the administration and gave his word that his people would support the initiative in order to get the desired outcome.
