The Bolgatanga Municipal Legislature has sent a signal to residents, that the Tribunal will take strong action to prosecute those who violate the sanitation law, following the onset of the rains to prevent floods and their associated consequences.
This was revealed during a clean-up operation, led by the Municipal Council in partnership with NADMO Municipality, GPRTU and Zoomlion at Bolgatanga's main truck station, in the market for old and new markets.
They demolished overcrowded gates, removed debris, and warned homeowners to stay away.
Speaking to our correspondent Emmanuel Akayeti, during a workout in Bolgatanga, MCE Rex Asanga said that due to the increase in population associated with abnormal sanitation practices, most water supply systems are congested at truck stations.
He added that, therefore, this work was a first for many, and protests and revolutions, on the orders of the President, sanitation and related matters would not be taken lightly which included all the structures blocking the waterways would be demolished.
The MCE further emphasized that sanitation and related diseases are not spectators of political color and that the Council will not in any way compromise its performance in the way it wishes. He said the issue of a well-meaning person should not be asked to keep his environment clean for personal non-political purposes.
NADMO Municipal Director Enerst Adombinaba said the event was a day of excitement during the rainy season. He said NADMO could not rehabilitate anyone in its normal state in the event of a catastrophe, not to mention the loss of life. He advised all citizens to follow the rules of sanitation to stay safe.
The Upper East Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, Fatawu Atenga acknowledged that although not enough has been done to keep the environment clean although he always reminded his people to remember how commuters dump garbage carelessly but to no avail. However he is determined to take on this task with his branch managers in that regard.
