Gabby becomes more powerful than the government NPPs Solomon
Maverick politician and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Solomon Owusu, has expressed his displeasure at the way President Akufo Addo’s cousin, Gabby Otchere Darko, has been made more powerful than the government.
According to him, the situation harms the image of the government and the NPP must not remain indifferent.
Gabby Asare Otchere who is described as a leading member of the ruling party does not hold any government post but is considered by many to be a powerful and influential figure in government circles and allegedly capable of pulling certain strings.
He is very active in the political discourse of the country, often strongly defending the government of his cousin President Akufo-Addo. His words seem to carry a lot of weight and recently, via a Tweet, he hinted that Ghana would go to the IMF for a bailout 48 hours before an official government announcement.
Speaking on the Ghana Kasa program on Kasapa 102.FM/Agoo TV, Solomon Owusu said Gabby is not appointed by the government so the media should stop focusing on him and taking his comments on the issues as an official government position.
“This is a government issue, when Gabby Otchere Darko tweets then it becomes a government position or policy. Last time I checked Gabby had no official position in government. We have made Gabby more powerful than the government and it affects the image of the government and as a political party we must not sit down to make that happen he has a right to speak but the media makes a very bad service to the country Gabby does not hold a government position, he is not the finance minister, he is not the president’s chief adviser and yet we will report and discuss what he says in relation to that of the other ministers”.
He added: “What is happening is giving the NPP and the government a bad name. The focus should be on those whom we use our taxes to pay. How can Gabby respond to the country, has there ever been a case where Parliament has summoned a Minister to answer a question and Gabby has done so on behalf of a Minister? Because the country does not recognize him in any official position, so his word should not be taken as an official government position.
