The Ga West Assembly has launched a "self-help project" to encourage development in the municipality.

The Ga West Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Chiefs and Queen Mothers Association in the municipality, has launched a self-help project aimed at the municipality's development.

In an interview with the media, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Clement Nii Lante Wilkinson, stated that the initiative is intended to supplement the government's efforts to promote equitable development in the assembly.

He stated that the self-help project would thrive primarily on contributions from residents of the Ga West Assembly's 17 electoral districts.

He made the announcement on the sidelines of a meeting with the Ga West Chiefs and Queen Mothers Association, Residents and Land Lords Association, and Assembly Members to discuss the assembly's development and welfare.

"[This meeting is] to discuss local development." We have a very large area in the area, about 480 kilometers. Only about 10% of our roads have been tarred, which I believe we can do on our own, so we have called the Residents Association, the chiefs, and Assembly Members to jaw-jaw, to come together and discuss how we will do that [development]."

"When you get to the community, you'll notice that a lot of people do things that will surprise you." They can buy sand trips to fill potholes and other things, so why don't we band together and reach out to others? If everyone supports us, we can do what we call self-help projects in the community. So, we called the chiefs and resident associations to discuss it with them and see if it is possible for us to do it, and they have already agreed. It's great news for them."

Mr Wilkinson explained that some residents, on their own initiative, find ways to address some developmental challenges in their communities, highlighting the need for a platform that brings all resources together to address some developmental issues without relying on the government.

He clarified that the move is not intended to take over the functions of the central government, but rather to provide a "quick fix" to societal issues that the assembly can handle at their level.

"We are always with the government, but we need to support it." For example, the government cannot build all of the roads for us, and we as residents should support the government because we will benefit."

"Someone may inquire whether we are already collecting taxes from them, such as property taxes; however, this is a self-help project; it is not about taxes." "The assembly and the community are working together on something."

The MCE concluded that he and his team would engage various communities to educate them about the initiative in order to gain their support.

"We have to go around and explain why we want to levy some or all of them." Ga West is now a community that people want to visit, but with the state of our roads, schools, and other infrastructure, we need to help each other. So the assembly supports the chiefs, and the chiefs support the residents, and the residents support the assembly as well, so it goes round and round, and then we move."
