Lionel Messi once stated that he would like to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, as speculation about the Manchester United forward's future continues.

Ronaldo has not joined the rest of the Manchester United squad on their pre-season tour to Thailand after informing the club that he wishes to leave this summer if a suitable offer comes in.

The Portuguese star is said to be eager to play Champions League football this season and is reportedly dissatisfied with United's lack of summer transfer activity following a sixth-place finish in the Premier League.

Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Napoli are among the clubs linked with Ronaldo, while a move to Paris Saint-Germain has also been mentioned as a possibility for the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

Ronaldo would join his long-time rival Messi at the Parc des Princes, where he is preparing for his second season.

It would be an unlikely partnership for the two players, who have competed for individual and team honors throughout their careers in Spanish football, with Messi at Barcelona and Ronaldo at Real Madrid.

Back in 2015, Messi was asked about the possibility of playing alongside Ronaldo and whether he would agree to it.

I enjoy playing with the best, and he is one of them. I believe it will be difficult for us to play on the same team, but I would obviously like to.

I've had the good fortune to play and participate with many excellent players, and I'd love to do the same with him.

For more than a decade, the two players have competed for honors. Jorge Mendes, Ronaldo's agent, recently met with Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly to discuss a possible deal for the Portugal international.

Blues head coach Thomas Tuchel, on the other hand, is said to have 'little interest' in signing Ronaldo, with the London club on the verge of completing a deal for Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling.

It remains to be seen.
