In retrospect, a penalty appears to be the simplest way to get on the scoresheet. Beating the keeper from 12 yards out can be considered a piece of cake, especially for the world's best scorers.
When you consider the weight of expectations and the brilliance of goalkeepers, the situation becomes much more complicated.
Even the best in the business have failed to convert from the spot on numerous occasions, and this list will only serve to emphasize the point.
The top five players who have missed the most penalties this century are as follows:
1. Lionel Messi - 29 missed penalties
Messi is the footballer with the most missed penalties, according to Sportskeeda. He's missed 29 penalties, four of which came while wearing an Argentina jersey.
He had 24 with Barcelona and one with PSG. He missed his first penalty against Villarreal in a Copa del Rey match on January 31, 2008.
2. Cristiano Ronaldo - 28 missed penalties
Ronaldo has now missed 28 penalties in his career, but he struck his attempt in the subsequent shootout with venom.
3. Francesco Totti - 18 missed penalties
Francesco Totti, an AS Roma legend, missed 18 penalties during his career.
4. Zlatan Ibrahimovic - 16 missed penalties
In his career, he has taken 100 penalties, scoring 84 and missing 16.

Drury's interview with Nana Aba Anamoah is always entertaining, and the man on the mic revealed that Messi has the upper hand in his eyes.
While Messi may be the number one player in the eyes of the commentators, the legendary wordsmith was also full of praise for Ronaldo, whom he dubbed "a genius." "A truly remarkable human being.
We've had the good fortune to witness the careers of two of the greatest players in history "he stated during the interview.
And what's interesting about them is that, while they're both brilliant, they're also quite different.
You know, Ronaldo's ability to leap and score with his head is incredible. I mean, he's an Olympic high jumper and sprinter.
He scores with both sides and his head after delivering a cross. He is brilliant, but if I had to choose between him and Messi to watch every day for the rest of my life, I'd choose Messi.
Drury then explained his decision, saying, "Because he appears to do what is impossible.
