Deadliest Aviation Accident that hard ever happened in the world
On March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747 passenger aircraft belonging to KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736 collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport (now Los Rodeos Airport, Tenerife North), on the Spanish island of Tenerife Tenerife . With a total of 583 deaths, this accident was the deadliest in aviation history.
A terrorist attack at Gran Canaria airport had led to the diversion of many flights to Los Rodeos, including the two planes involved in the accident. The airport quickly became congested with parked aircraft blocking the only runway, forcing departing aircraft to taxi down the runway. Dense fog rolled over the airfield, severely reducing visibility for pilots and the control tower.The collision occurred as the KLM aircraft began its takeoff roll while the fog-shrouded Pan Am aircraft was still on the runway and about to swerve onto the taxiway. The impact and resulting fire killed everyone on board the KLM 4805 and most of the occupants of the Pan Am 1736, with only 61 surviving in the front of the aircraft.
Subsequent investigation by the Spanish authorities showed that the main cause of the accident was the KLM captain's decision to take off on the erroneous assumption that an air traffic control (ATC) clearance for take-off had been given. Dutch investigators placed greater emphasis on mutual misunderstandings in radio communications between KLM and ATC crews, but eventually KLM admitted that their crew was responsible for the accident and the airline agreed to financially compensate the
families of all victims compensate.
The disaster had a lasting impact on the industry, particularly highlighting the vital importance of using standardized phraseology in radio communications.Cockpit procedures were also revised, helping to establish crew resource management as an integral part of pilot training.
