Following the government's decision to approach the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for assistance in reviving Ghana's faltering economy, President Nana Akufo-Akufo has been encouraged to address Ghanaians.
Francis Addai Nimoh, a former Mampong Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), made this appeal on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen show. He claimed that since President Akufo-Addo is in charge of the taskforce negotiating with the IMF team, it is his right to address Ghanaians.
As discussions are ongoing, Akufo-Addo should have the bravery to address Ghanaians about the IMF and explain the actual state of the economy. He should do this now because he is the one we want to hear from at this point, not his advisers.
However, the previous candidate for the NPP presidential nomination acknowledged that there are difficulties in the nation and that the country's biggest problem is its enormous debt, therefore approaching the IMF was the proper move.
"The system is challenging. The heat is being felt by everybody. Let's avoid word games as a party and as a government. In whatever we do, the IMF is also involved. Because the IMF is a national concern, we must depoliticize the situation. People are allowed to accuse this administration of incompetence, just like we did with John Mahama, he added.
Background
Ghanaians were informed on Tuesday, July 5, that Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will discuss the nation's intention to request a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Thursday, July 14.
Gabby Otchere-Darko, a prominent New Patriotic Party member, revealed this in a tweet.
He claims that during the formal inauguration of an occasion put on by the Accra Business School and South East Technological University in Ireland, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would speak as the event's Guest of Honor.
Beginning on Wednesday, July 6, a group from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will meet with representatives of the government to discuss Ghana's economic recovery plan.
