A depressed Liverpool fan committed suicide as his side trailed 3-0 at half-time behind AC Milan in the Champions League final.
An inquest into 43-year-old Mark Houghton found he was found by his girlfriend Jacqueline Young at 9pm on May 25, when Liverpool's defeat seemed certain.
He was found hanging from a hook in the kitchen of his home in Darwen, Lancashire, by a leather belt.

Coroner Michael Singleton, sitting at Blackburn, was told that Mr.Houghton has suffered from depression since losing his job as a forklift driver in a work-related accident two years ago.
The injury he suffered caused pain in his back and shoulders almost constantly.
Ms. Young said that Mr. Houghton was a lifelong Reds fan.The death of Anfield legend Emlyn Hughes last November had also hit him hard.
She said, "I didn't know he was contemplating suicide, but I realized he was suffering from depression two weeks before he died."
Ms. Young said she had known Mr. Houghton since she was a teenager and been a couple for nine months.Taking testimony from Ms Young, the coroner said: "The night Mark died was the night of the Champions League final. By 9pm when his body was found, Liverpool were 3-0 down.

dr Ajeet Gupta, Mr Houghton's GP, said he had been treating him for depression since 2002 but none of the treatments seemed to be effective.
