Due to Kylian Mbappe's influence at Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), PSG's talisman Lionel Messi is reportedly considering a return to his previous club Barcelona.
Messi signed a two-year contract with a one-year option at PSG after his unexpected departure from Barcelona last summer. In 34 games across competitions last season, he made 26 goal contributions.
El Nacional reports that Messi has spoken with Xavi Hernandez, the manager of Barcelona, to express his desire to rejoin his old team. The 35-year-life old's has reportedly been extremely difficult as a result of Mbappe's rising status at the club, who has been forced to make due with a smaller role. In the dressing room, there is apparently resentment and jealousy due to Mbappe's recent contract extension.
The report also claims that the club's relationship with Messi has suffered as a result of the dismissal of manager Mauricio Pochettino. Additionally, the new manager Christophe Galtier's strict code of conduct for players at the club hasn't exactly won over the former Barcelona player.
Messi has also been miffed by PSG's position on Neymar's future. The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner wants to extend his reunion with Neymar in Paris, according to a previous story from Le10Sport. It is unclear, though, whether his viewpoint will affect the club's decision to transfer the Brazilian.
Last season, Messi assisted his Parisians in winning the Ligue 1 championship, but he struggled in Europe. The Parisians let a 2-0 aggregate lead against the eventual champion Real Madrid slip away in the Round of 16.
For PSG's upcoming season, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe will both be guaranteed starting roles.
Le Parisien reports that Christophe Galtier, the new manager of the Parisians, has named six players who will start for his side in the upcoming season. According to the source, the list includes Messi, Mbappe, Marquinhos, Marco Verratti, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Achraf Hakimi.
The omission of players like Neymar and Presnel Kimpembe is consistent with rumors that the pair may leave this summer. In addition, according to a different Le Parisien story, the Parisians intend to sell 11 players this summer.
The following players are expected to be released: Mauro Icardi, Georginio Wijnaldum, Ander Herrera, Idrissa Gueye, Leandro Paredes, Julian Draxler, Danilo Pereira, Layvin Kurzawa, Abdou Diallo, Thilo Kehrer, and Eric Ebimbe.
