As reported by AS Monaco, Liverpool is one of the teams considering a deal for a Lille midfielder who they believe may succeed Aurélien Tchouaméni. Sadio Mané, a Senegalese player, may have left Anfield this summer, but another man who is now making an impression in Ligue 1 is apparently on Liverpool's radar for a deal.Although Amadou Onana (who actually plays for Belgium) is not a name that many Liverpool fans outside of France will be familiar with, Get French Football News reports that the Reds are interested in the 20-year-old Lille star.
Onana is a tall, powerful player who is best used at the basis of a midfield, in contrast to Leicester midfielder Boubakary Soumaré, who has admittedly struggled to get going in England despite being highly regarded in France prior to his £21 million move a year ago.
While West Ham United are rumored to be preparing to make another bid for the Belgian after having their initial offer of €23 million (£19 million) rejected, Everton, Leicester, and AS Monaco are thought to be among the clubs who are particularly interested.
The former Club Brugge player is reportedly being considered by Monaco as a replacement for Aurélien Tchouaméni, with Liverpool, Arsenal, and Newcastle United also being mentioned as potential employers.
Onana only relocated to France this summer, and although he still has four years left on his contract, it appears doubtful that he will remain at Lille for the duration of that arrangement given his rate of development. Over the summer, he earned his senior international debut for Belgium by taking the field against Virgil van Dijk and the Netherlands.
Over the past few years, Lille has assisted in the development of a number of players, including Jonathan David, Renato Sanches, Victor Osimhen, and Eden Hazard. Sven Botman, a highly regarded defender, has just joined Newcastle.
After just one season in Ligue 1, it is highly doubtful that Liverpool has learned enough to make a bid for Onana now to enhance their ranks, and the Reds are not anticipated to make any other transfer moves (in terms of incomings) this summer.
They would typically strike after another transfer, possibly three or four years later, when Onana's level could be properly determined and a more complete picture of his potential could be developed.
But given that Lille is a reputable club to turn to for up-and-coming talent, he seems like someone to keep an eye on over the course of the upcoming several seasons.
If he were to do well there and stay there, as well as in the Premier League or with a larger French team, Liverpool might then be genuinely interested in pursuing a transfer.
