Serbia's Embassy in Ghana has reopened.
Ghana and Serbia have rekindled bilateral relations with the re-opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Accra on Friday, July 8, 2022.
The re-opening of the Embassy was preceded by a bilateral meeting between the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey and her Serbian counterpart Mr. Nikola Selakovi?.
Among the topics discussed by the Foreign Ministers during the meeting were agriculture, defense, digitalization, artificial intelligence, and trade and investment. Both Ministers expressed their hope that the revitalized relations will be strengthened further for the benefit of both countries' citizens.
Ms Botchwey praised the Government of Serbia for its ongoing support of Ghana's development efforts, particularly in the areas of education, sports, culture, and capacity-building.
She advocated for the resumption of talks between the two countries' Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation to help streamline areas of cooperation. In this regard, she proposed holding the first meeting in October 2022.
Mr. Nikola Selakovi, for his part, was optimistic that the re-opening of the Serbian Embassy would strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and hoped that Ghana would also re-open its Embassy in Belgrade in due course.
He thanked the Ghanaian government and people for their warm welcome and expressed his desire to reciprocate in kind.
Ghana and Serbia have had fruitful bilateral relations since the days of the then-Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) and Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The two presidents had a personal friendship and were co-founders of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
