Manchester City unveiled new signing Erling Haaland in front of their fans, months after Manchester United failed to sign the Norwegian international.
Manchester United's search of Erling Haaland was long overdue, but with each passing day, there are more indications that they never had a chance.
After months of speculation, United withdrew from the race for the former Borussia Dortmund star in January. Despite a connection with former interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who was involved with Red Bull Salzburg at the same time as the young frontman, this was not the case.
Haaland eventually left Dortmund this june, entering Manchester City in a deal worth a reported £400,000 per week. On Sunday, the 21-year-old was introduced to fans of his new club, and his comments revealed how difficult it would have been to complete a deal.
"I never like to say it, but... Manchester United," Haaland said when asked which game he was most looking forward to. The striker's father, Alf-Inge, played for City for a time, suffering a serious injury at the hands of Roy Keane in a derby, so the game is already significant.
Haaland has previously stated that he grew up supporting City. Indeed, on the day of the unveiling, he shared an old photo of himself wearing a City shirt with the word "Dad" written on the back.
Given their rivalry, luring Haaland to Old Trafford may have always been a difficult task. Professional connections are one thing, but family ties are quite another.

The situation surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo has exacerbated United's failure to sign Haaland. Last season's top scorer has told those at Old Trafford that he wants to leave after the team failed to qualify for the Champions League, and he is missing from the team's tour in Thailand due to family obligations.
Erik ten Hag's team has already lost another striker, with Edinson Cavani opting to leave after his contract expired, despite only being used sparingly last season. Attempts to add another scorer to their ranks have so far been futile, with only defender Tyrell Malacia joining them.
