In light of Ghana's present economic crisis, the Public Sector Workers Union (PSWU) is asking with the government to take notice of its pleas for assistance.
PSWU General Secretary Bernard Adjei remarked that employees are having difficulty providing for themselves, which is why they are asking for a cost of living stipend on Sunday's episode of the Probe on JoyNews.
Because things continue to get worse by the day, we think we can always pull ourselves together and meet worker demands. How long can employees endure this? We only ask that the employees be given some breathing room since circumstances are difficult and without it, we don't know how we will make it.
Prior to leaving, Mr. Adjei observed that public sector employees and other unions had raised concerns. "None of us intended for it to reach this situation. I think we've been asking for this for a long. It was brought up on May Day, followed by a letter, and then our colleagues, the teacher unions, followed it up with an ultimatum. Unfortunately, nothing was done until the strike started, he said.
In light of the economic difficulty that has forced the nation to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund, his remarks came after certain organised labour organisations started to call for the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) (IMF).
Due to the government's refusal to provide them the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) they requested, teacher unions have already announced a "indefinite strike."
Additionally, the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives Ghana (UPNMG) and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) have similar requests.
Additionally, around 27,000 employees in the public sector are anticipated to walk out. The workers had previously stated that they were unable to continue bearing the weight of the nation's ongoing economic crisis.
In light of this, the staff of around 69 public sector organisations has agreed to submit a motion to a vote on whether or not to lay down their tools.
Mr. Adjei said that it is past time for the government to provide public sector employees the compensation they deserve.
