Erik ten Hag's choice to affirm Harry Maguire as Manchester United chief 'a misstep' as Danny Murphy refers to Liverpool model
Harry Maguire will be Manchester United chief this season, Erik ten Hag has affirmed.
The Dutch manager assumed responsibility toward the beginning of the mid year with plans to roll out discount improvements to how the group works to close the hole on the Premier League's main four.
As well as offloading the likes of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Edinson Cavani, United are planning to make a number of new signings in order to strengthen the squad.
One more key choice confronting Ten Hag has been with respect to who takes the armband for the impending season.
Maguire was captain, however came in for analysis over the last season for his conflicting exhibitions for both club and country.
While some have approached Ten Hag to name another commander, the Dutchman has demanded that the 29-year-old will hold his status for the new mission.
Addressing the press when Man United's pre-season excursion to Thailand, Ten Hag said: "Harry Maguire is the skipper.
"Obviously I need to get to know the players as a whole and that requires some investment, yet he is a laid out chief
“Over the years he has achieved a lot of success and so I have no doubts about this issue.”
While a decision has now been made, ex-Liverpool man Danny Murphy believes that Ten Hag may live to regret his choice.
Talking on White and Jordan, Murphy said: "He believes that is the correct thing to do, yet I believe he's presumably committed an error. I think it was the ideal opportunity for a difference in captaincy and initiative at United.
"I'd give it to whoever he acquires who is sufficiently large and courageous enough to take it on.
"I was at Liverpool when Paul Ince strolled through the entryway, skipper, bang. He changed the mindset in the changing area straight away.
