Club Legend Sergio Busquets Set To Leave FC Barcelona
Sergio Busquets is set to leave FC Barcelona next year. Getty Images Captain Sergio Busquets is set to leave FC Barcelona, the club assumes. The 33-year-old turns 34 next week, and currently has less than 12 months to run on his current contract. Despite former teammate and now current head coach Xavi Hernandez making him an undisputed starter as pivot in the heart of the midfield, Mundo Deportivo write that it is assumed by the club that next season will be Busquets' last in the elite. His next destination is likely to be the US and more specifically Inter Miami, which might make him the first of a group of ex-Barca legends to head to the David Beckham-owned franchise that has also been linked to Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Jordi Alba. Himself having just one year left to run on his contract, Messi could also leave PSG as a free agent in the summer of 2023 and meet up with his former colleague in Florida. It is said that several MLS outfits tried to attract Busquets this summer, but it is his intention to honor his contract with Barca which is why he has rejected all the offers that came his way. Inter Miami pressed hardest. But just like Messi, Busquets wants to play in the World Cup later this year for his country, Spain, which means he would be better off staying in Europe for now where national team manager Luis Enrique can better observe him. Busquets' decision has already been passed on to Barca, who have no plans to offer him a contract renewal. Already preparing for life without one of their best-ever center of the park maestros, Barca have recently brought in Franck Kessie to offer support to the veteran in his final season. Frenkie de Jong will perhaps be enthused by news that Busquets will move on so that he can finally occupy his preferred pivot position at Camp Nou. Yet reports continue to circulate that the Dutchman will be sold to Manchester United in a deal worth €65mn ($66.6mn) up front and a further €20mn ($20.5mn) in add-ons bringing the total value of the transfer to €85mn ($87mn).
