The Kumasi Academy Alumni Association (KAPSA-AKUNINI GLOBAL) has built an ultra-modern science laboratory for the Kumasi Academy Senior High School (KUMACA); Ghana Baptist Convention Mission School.

The total cost of the construction of the monument was set at GH 9.6 million and the acquisition of the above-mentioned price value of the object was realized by the joint contribution of the members of the association.

The project took nine years to build and complete and was commissioned on Saturday 8 July 2022.

The newly built laboratory complements other support offered to the school by members of the association, which include, among others, the construction of a spa house, modern toilets, the provision of books and monthly support for teachers.

Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah, Education Minister Yaw Adutwum, Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) founder and leader Kofi Akpaloo, Peter Mac Manu (COCOBOD Board Chairman) among others were present at the commissioning ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of Education praised the association and said that the facility is not an ordinary science laboratory but a STEM laboratory of the 21st century.

“All schools across the country will be looking to your example. An example of old students coming together to build a cutting-edge 21st century science lab,” he said.

According to him, the vision of KAPSA-AKUNINI GLOBAL in relation to the construction of the facility adds to the government's efforts to transform Science, Technology and Mathematics (STEM).

He further stated that approximately 30 percent of KUMACA's student population enrolled in science will provide additional support to the school.

He assured that the Ministry of Education will support the school with scientific equipment to become one of the STEM schools.

Yaw Adutwum continued that the government is not only building new STEM schools but also transforming existing schools to become STEM schools. “But because you (KAPSA-AKUNINI GLOBAL) led the way, you made your job easier. So making you one of the STEM schools is something that I can commit to you today because you have already started…therefore as the Minister of Education I will consider you as one of the STEM schools that the President wants to transform and build in the country. ".

Ernest Yaw Anim, auditor of the association and chairman of the commission in an interview with Modernghana news described the laboratory as the first of its kind in Ghana.

He said the association is considering coming up with other interventions including setting up facilities for other departments of the school.

Ernest Yaw Anim noted that the doors of KAPSA-AKUNINI GLOBAL are open to all senior secondary schools who want to learn from them how they managed to build such a monumental science laboratory.
