Government meets with teacher unions and others today.

Today, July 12, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) will pick up where it left off in its negotiations with 23 labor unions, which are asking a 20% cost-of-living allowance (COLA).

The gathering will take place in Accra in the conference room of the Ministry of Health.

Among the state entities that will be there are the Controller and Accountant General's Department, the FWSC, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of National Security, and the Ghana Education Service.

This follows a crisis conference on July 8 between the government team and organized labor unions that resulted in a standoff.

Should the government not provide them with relief from the current economic crisis, which has put them in excruciating pain, more than 15 unions have threatened a statewide strike.

They consist of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Public Sector Workers Union (PSWU), and Construction and Building Materials Workers Union.

Already downing tools are four teacher unions.

The Teachers and Educational Workers Union, the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana, the National Association of Graduate Teachers, and the Ghana National Association of Teachers all went on strike on July 4.

The preparation of applicants for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has been severely hampered by the lack of teachers in the classrooms. This year's examination is anticipated to start in October.

President Akufo-Addo has asked striking teachers to return to the classrooms pending the conclusion of ongoing discussions in order to protect the future of the pupils.

During the national Eid-ul-Adha prayers in 2022, he made the plea.

At the Eid-ul-Adha national prayers gathering in 2022, he voiced the appeal.

"I want to add my voice to the outstanding Minister for Employment and Labour Relations' call for the teachers to return to the classrooms pending the outcome of these negotiations so that the education of our children, some of whom are getting ready to take their final exams, is not impacted," the President said.
