PUBLIC SERVICE EMPLOYEES GO ON STRIKE

Starting on Tuesday, July 19, members of the Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) will go on strike.

They give many reasons for their choice, including the nation's rising rate of inflation.

The government's refusal to grant mandate for the negotiation of institution-specific conditions of service for a number of organizations under the Single Spine, as well as occasionally using delay tactics during negotiations, made the situation worse, according to a press release announcing the decision on Tuesday, July 12.

"The more than 27,000 employees of the more than 65 public sector organizations that comprise the PSWU feel the pinch in their wallets, and each passing day makes it more difficult for them to meet their fundamental demands. The economic concerns that public sector employees face are undoubtedly made worse by a potential return to the IMF, which also brings back unpleasant labor laws that harm the average worker.

Notably, entering an IMF program runs the risk of a return to a harsh industrial environment rife with conditions, such as the sale of important and productive national assets, layoffs, a freeze on hiring, and wage freezes (an intention denied by His Excellency the President during his remarks at the first quadrennial delegates conference of the TUC (Ghana) in Kumasi on March 23, 2021).

In addition, for a number of employees who left their jobs in accordance with the National Pensions (Amendment) Act, 2014 (Act 883), which did not take full effect until January 2020, the imbalance in their lump sum payouts relative to those who retired under PNDCL 247 has not been fixed.

"Despite the President's unwavering promises to address this issue as early as October 13, 2020, in the midst of the Elections Campaign, this has led to the already vulnerable members of our society, the elderly, experiencing serious economic hardships," the statement reads.

The statement emphasized that "as a result, our members were left with no choice but to begin on a strike effective Tuesday, July 19, 2022 until our concerns are addressed at an Emergency Meeting of the Management Committee and representatives from the approximately 65 institutions that make up the PSWU."
