Chelsea are interested in luring Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski away from Barcelona, with one of the summer's most contentious transfer sagas still ongoing as the new season approaches.
Chelsea have made an audacious move to try to sabotage Barcelona's pursuit of Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski.
After leading the German giants to their tenth consecutive title, the 33-year-old marksman is determined to move on to a new challenge. Lewandowski's signing would be a statement signing for new Chelsea owner Todd Boelhy, as well as an impressive response to Manchester City's acquisition of Erling Haaland and Liverpool's acquisition of Darwin Nunez.
Barcelona has always been the Pole's first choice for some time, but Bayern, who have fought tooth and nail to keep their prize asset, want £42 million up front. With the financial situation of the Spanish giants posing a problem, Chelsea and PSG have made moves to entice Lewandowski to the Premier League and the French league, respectively.
The player is said to be open to both offers, and Thomas Tuchel, who is in town with his squad for the first leg of their US tour, believes he is a better fit for the team he is building than 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo. Lewandowski scored 50 goals in all competitions last season and has 193 goals in the last four seasons.
Chelsea are expected to confirm the signing of City and England winger Raheem Sterling within the next 48 hours, with the former Liverpool star flying out to begin pre-season training. While Sterling's desire to leave the Etihad Stadium has been muted, Lewandowski has made no secret of his desire to leave Bayern this summer, despite returning for pre-season training.
"I just want to leave Bayern," the ex-Borussia Dortmund talisman told Polish outlet OnetSport last month while on international duty with Poland. More important than the work is loyalty and respect. The best thing to do is work together to find a solution. They refused to listen to me until the very end. Something died inside of me, and it's impossible for me to get over it. You can't make up for it, no matter how much you try.
"Throughout my many years at the club, I was always ready and available, and despite injuries and pain, I gave my all. I believe the best course of action is to find a solution that works for both parties. And to avoid seeking a one-sided decision. I'm not looking for a one-sided solution; that makes no sense after all this time, after such a successful era, and with my willingness and support."
Lewandowski continued: "What kind of player would want to join Bayern knowing that this could happen to them? So where is the loyalty and respect? I've always been prepared; I spent eight pleasant years here, met wonderful people, and I'd like to remember it that way."
