Chelsea warned over "deluded" Cristiano Ronaldo signing as he won't make starting XI
Glen Johnson believes that Cristiano Ronaldo shouldn't transfer to Stamford Bridge this summer because doing so would show Chelsea to be "deluded."
Glen Johnson, a former Chelsea player, has advised his former team that they would be "deluded" if they proceeded with a contract to capture Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.
Ronaldo has yet to report to Manchester United's preseason workouts, despite the club's speculation that it is just due to "personal family circumstances." But the 37-year-old has also said he wants to leave the team because he wants to play in the Champions League again next year.
Ronaldo is not for sale, according to United, and is part of Erik ten Hag's plans for the upcoming campaign. However, Chelsea has surfaced as a surprising candidate to recruit the player, reportedly making a bid of £14 million as new co-owner Todd Boehly looks to make a statement after taking over.
Chelsea may have just signed Raheem Sterling after loaning Romelu Lukaku out, but Ronaldo might join him if the Blues decide to make a move. Ronaldo, who has one year left on his United deal, would be content to join Chelsea if the opportunity presented itself.
However, Johnson, a former Chelsea player, advised the club that signing Ronaldo would be "deluded" and that he wouldn't even make their starting XI under Thomas Tuchel. According to Johnson, BettingOdds.com: "It probably relies on the justification for wanting to get Cristiano Ronaldo.
"You're mistaken if you believe you're getting the Ronaldo of old by signing him. However, if you sign him because he is a huge commercial deal and you will make a ton of money from shirt sales and sponsorships, then in that sense, it is a smart move.
"Boehly himself is the only person who can respond to the question of why he wants to sign him. I am aware of his lack of football knowledge, but those who purchase football teams are clearly successful and intelligent in their chosen fields.
"You don't purchase a soccer team without a strategy. If they were to purchase Ronaldo, I do think it would be more for business reasons than to add him to the starting lineup.
Ronaldo is currently not for sale by United, and certainly not to a Premier League competitor. However, the Portuguese star might try to force a transfer, making Ten Hag's first summer in command challenging.
