Chelsea is without a doubt one of the world's most powerful clubs, and their reputation has helped them attract a plethora of top players. Many of those players had success at the club, but others failed miserably.
The Blues have had a particularly bad run with strikers. Many have referred to Chelsea's striker problem as a curse, and they have good reason to do so. With the exception of Diego Costa and Didier Drogba, very few strikers can claim success at Stamford Bridge.
Romelu Lukaku became the latest victim of Chelsea's striker curse, and the Belgian didn't help matters by publicly declaring his desire to return to Inter Milan after only six months at the club. A few weeks later, he received his wish.
There have been other top strikers who have failed while playing for the Blues. Prior to Lukaku, it was Gonzalo Higuain who couldn't break the curse after being loaned out by Chelsea. In 18 appearances, the Argentine managed only 5 goals.
When Hernan Crespo joined Chelsea in 2003, he played as a striker. He stayed in London for five years before leaving the club in 2008. He only scored 45 goals in his career.
Mateja Kezman also played for the Blues as a striker between Crespo's tenure, but he was only able to find the back of the net seven times before leaving the club in 2005.
Andriy Shevchenko was another top striker who played for the Blues. The Ukrainian striker appeared in 77 games for the Blues over two spells, scoring 22 goals.
Fernando Torres joined Chelsea from Liverpool in a £50 million deal. He was the best striker in the world at Liverpool, but things quickly went south for him at Chelsea, where he only scored 45 goals in four seasons.
Chelsea took a risk by signing Ramadel Falcao on loan from AS Monaco, but he only scored one goal in 12 appearances during his one season at the club.
Alvaro Morata, who spent three years at Chelsea, also failed to break the club's striker curse, scoring 24 goals in 72 appearances during his time there.
