Following a pre-season incident, Arsenal has made a bid for a Portuguese-based defender.

According to reports, Arsenal has made a bid for Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo.

Tierney went down with a knee injury in April, so the Gunners were unable to call on his services during the final months of the 2022/23 season.

Last season, the former Celtic (opens in new tab) defender missed 16 games as Arsenal (opens in new tab) missed out on a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.

After Tierney's latest setback, Mikel Arteta is considering bringing in a back-up from elsewhere to replace Nuno Tavares and Granit Xhaka.

Tierney was named to Arsenal's starting XI for their pre-season match against Nurnberg, but he was taken off after only 30 minutes.

Arteta insisted after the game that the early substitution was intentional, but that hasn't stopped him from making a bid for Grimaldo.

Arsenal have offered £5.9 million for the Spaniard, who has been at Benfica (opens in new tab) since the beginning of 2016.

Grimaldo's contract expires next summer, and the Gunners are hoping to sign him on the cheap.

However, given that the 26-year-old played in the majority of Benfica's Primeira Liga matches last season, Arsenal will almost certainly need to up their bid.

Their opening offer was most likely intended to be the starting point for negotiations, but the bid demonstrates that Arteta wants a more reliable deputy for Tierney.

Last season, Tavares had some bright attacking moments, but he is suspect defensively, and Xhaka is not a natural left-back.

"He's really good," Arteta said of Tierney after Arsenal's 5-3 win over Nurnberg in a friendly.

He's been working hard in the gym. We wanted to give him a proper warm-up, play the first half hour, and then get him out because he'd been out for over three months. So he was in good shape and there were no problems.

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have both been in charge of some of Europe's most potent offensive units. They were unbeaten in the Premier League for the previous three seasons. They competed against each other during the previous season, but the Cityzens won for the second season in a row.

One of their many distinguishing features was the caliber of their attacking players. Manchester City has players like Sterling, Jesus, and De Bruyne, among others. Liverpool, on the other hand, had players like Mohamed Salah, who won the award for top scorer the previous season, Jota, Mane, and Diaz.

They embarrassed many of the world's best clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal.
