12 July (Reuters) After the Major League Soccer team announced the former Manchester United and England forward's appointment as head coach on Tuesday, Wayne Rooney insisted that it was not a "backward step" to accept the position.

The English club was relegated to the third tier during the 36-year-turbulent old's 17-month tenure as manager of Derby County due to financial difficulties. The player for DC United from 2018 to 2019 resigned from the position last month.

Interim Until Rooney receives his work visa, DC United manager Chad Ashton will continue in charge. His coaching staff will be revealed later.

Rooney told reporters, "I've noticed a few articles, definitely back in England, about this being a possible step backward in my managerial career. "That actually seems a little demeaning to this league," I thought.

Rooney claimed that his stint at Derby had aided in his growth as a manager and coach.

And returning to DC United in the MLS was an exciting challenge for him. He continued, "I feel that this will help me grow as a coach."

Following a successful tenure as Derby's temporary player-manager the previous season, Rooney was promoted to full-time manager in January 2021.

He announced his resignation last month, stating he hoped Derby will be headed by someone with new vitality who was unaffected by the unrest at the team.

"Undoubtedly, I have ambition. I hope to manage at the highest level one day, and doing this is a step in that direction "Rooney remarked.

"But partly because of my relationship with the club. I've been here previously, and DC United is the only MLS team I would have supported. Being the manager here makes me proud."

Rooney scored 253 goals for Manchester United during his playing career, and he also helped the team win five Premier League championships and the Champions League. With 53 goals, he holds the scoring record for England's national team.

In the Eastern Conference, DC United is second from the bottom with 17 points after the same number of games. Their most recent opponent, Philadelphia Union, destroyed them 7-0, and they will be hosted by Columbus Crew next.
