Highlife icon AB Crentsil has passed away.

Alfred Benjamin Crentsil, also known as AB Crentsil, was a legendary figure in Ghanaian highlife music. He died at the age of 79.

On July 13, 2022, sounds engineer Fred Kyei Mensah, also known as Fredyma, posted on Facebook to confirm the passing of the renowned vocalist.

"GOODBYE, AB CRENSTIL. AB Crenstil, the original songwriter and performer of the well-known and contentious songs "Moses and Atia," has passed away. Before joining the Sweet Talks Band with Smart Nkansah and starting his own band, Ahenfo, he spent time with a number of other bands. It's impossible to forget his hit songs "Juliana and Obi ba wiase," "the message read.

The veteran singer has reportedly been ill for some time, according to Fredyma, who revealed this in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb.

Numerous tributes have been left for the deceased composer.

A.B. Crentsil's brief biography, taken from Wikipedia, is provided below.

To the late Alfred Benjamin Crentsil Sr. and Esi Yaaba in Prestea, Gold Coast (modern-day Ghana), was born Alfred Benjamin Crentsil Jr. in 1943.

Prior to assuming the AB Crentsil name without the junior after his father's passing in 1984, he was always referred to as AB Junior.

Takoradi Methodist Primary served as both his primary and middle school, as did Rev. Cleveland Middle School. After passing his middle school exams, AB began working as an electrical apprentice for his father, a works superintendent at Ghana Railways' technical branch in Takoradi.

Mr. Thedoh introduced Crentsil to the guitar when he was in middle school.

As A.B. Crentsil honed his guitar skills, he began to sing along as he played. He was performing with Kwesi Donkor's Strollers Band while also working as an electrician.

Crentsil has performed with the Sweet Talks, the El Dorados, and finally the Ahenfo Band. The Sweet Talks, led by Crentsil and Smart Nkansah, served as the house band at the Talk Of The Town Hotel in Tema during the 1970s.

In 1990, Crentsil inaugurated a 16-track recording studio. One of his most well-known songs is "Devil." Crentsil keeps putting out new albums and winning awards given to the best musicians in Ghana. He always says this:

Highlife is the original style of music for Ghanaians, and we will always return to it. When burger highlife came along and everyone loved it, we all jumped on board because we too wanted to make some money.
