The People's National Congress (PNC) has called on the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Suman Kingsford Bagbin, to empathize with Mrs. Sarah Adwoa Safo, Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency.
Ms Adwoa Safo, who also serves as Minister of Gender Equality, Children and Social Protection, has been absent from Parliament for several months, prompting calls for her removal.
However, the PNC says it is concerned because the issues involve the welfare and well-being of the minister's children.
A statement signed by Mrs. Janet Asana Nabla, Secretary General of the PNC and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Tema, narrated that the minister entered parliament in 2009 and has since worked tirelessly for her party and country without appearing for a long time. time.
It added that Ms Safo had no record of contempt of parliament, so it was strange that the MP had not attended for so long, adding that "but the reason is obvious as she stated in one of her media engagements - the child's health and related complications .”
The PNC therefore calls on the leadership of the Parliament, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the government to approach the problem with empathy.
"The PNC is asking the Speaker, the entire members of Parliament, JE, the voters of Dome Kwabenya and the government to show patience in dealing with the MP. The PNC believes that she deserves our support and sympathy," the statement said.
She further asked Parliament and its Privileges Committee to work with the MP so that a suitable time to meet with her could be arranged.
The PNC has asked the government and parliament to enact a law that would enable all employers in Ghana to have a designated place for breastfeeding mothers, which could be called Breastfeeding Centres.
"Depending on the nature of the facility, there should be a nurse, a medical assistant or a nurse to offer assistance to these mothers," she explained.
This, he said, would not only help nursing mothers to focus on their work, but also increase productivity and create jobs for nurses.
