Pep Guardiola faces Liam Delap dilemma at Man City in transfer window

Liam Delap is currently on a huge high following his performances for England's Under-19s en route to international glory. Their triumph over Israel in the European Championship final will be one of Delap's career highlights, whatever else he goes on to achieve. His accomplishment with the young Three Lions has shown Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola that a vital decision needs to be made over his further development. At 19, Delap has already shown that he is in Guardiola's thoughts with his six appearances for the senior City squad last season. But the teenager cannot afford to be sat in the Under-23s for the majority of the 2022/23 campaign again. ALSO READ: What Guardiola told Taylor Harwood-Bellis about Vincent Kompany before Burnley loan Since joining from Derby County's academy in 2019, Delap has not had that regular senior squad experience, which he now needs to push him on to that next level. Therefore, both Guardiola and City now have a choice of two options to make. They could either give him more of a role in the City squad, potentially as a backup position to either (or both) Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez. Or, he could be allowed to seek a loan move away from the Etihad Stadium. Both of these decisions would have their merits. Guardiola does like to keep some of the younger, talented members of his squad at close quarters to help nurture their development. Phil Foden is a key example of this. While many clamoured for him to be given a loan spell, Guardiola stuck to his guns and eventually the Stockport ace has become the rightful heir to David Silva. Opportunities for Delap may arguably be easier to come by next season too. With Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling both looking at moves to London clubs, there may well be space in the City squad for academy products to be given a chance — why not give one of these spots to the young striker? A safer option however could be to allow Delap to gain regular minutes under his belt in the Championship. Following in the footsteps of Taylor Harwood-Bellis and joining a club like Burnley for the season, who will most likely be challenging at the right end of the table under Vincent Kompany, could do wonders for the 19-year-old.
