BRIGHTON DEFENDER TARIQ LAMPTEY ALWAYS WANTED TO PLAY FOR GHANA- EX-GHANA FA OFFICIAL REVEALS

Lamptey the was among the five players to have switched nationality, to play for the Black Stars ahead of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

 

The Ghanaian journalist said the Brighton defender sent him a text some years back on wanting to play for the Black Stars.

 

“Tariq Lamptey wrote to me that he wanted to play for the Ghana five years ago. I still have that text on my phone. Most of these players want to play for the motherland. I’m happy the GFA was able to convince these young talented players to switch nationality”.

 

 

Sannie Daara who works with CAF, said players switching nationality to play for Ghana will help strengthen the Black Stars team ahead of the World Cup.

 

“Even if they’re switching because of the World Cup, we are going to gain. We must be truthful, our team isn’t formidable and we qualified for the World Cup due to lack. We may not be lucky at Qatar. That is why we need to strengthen our team with these players”, he added

 

Tariq Lamptey has represented England U21 on 2 occasions before switching to play for the country of his parents.

 

Tariq was born in Hillingdon, Greater London, Prior to his Chelsea career, Lamptey was playing grassroots footbal for his local side, Larkspur Rovers before joining the academy at the age of eight.

 

On December 29, 2019, Lamptey made his professional debut away against Arsenal in the Premier league, replacing Fikayo Tomori in the 59th minute where He was a lively presence helping Chelsea come back from 1–0 down to win 2–1. Speaking to Chelsea TV after the match, Lamptey described how nervous he was making his first appearance: "My heart was racing, this is the moment me, and my family have been waiting for."Lamptey became the seventh academy graduate to make a first team appearance during Frank Lampard's managerial tenure at Chelsea Fc, following in the footsteps of Billy Gilmour, Reece James, Mason Mount, Marc Guehi, Tino Anjorin and Ian Maatsen. Lamptey made two more appearances for CFC both coming in the FA Cup wins over Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge and Hull City away before leaving the club. He made a total of 3 appearances for the Blues.
