Police have arrested the driver of an articulated lorry that crashed into the vehicle of the Municipal Chief Executive Officer (MCE) of Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Assembly Alfred Amoah and his driver Samuel Gyasi who both died on the spot.
He was charged with careless and reckless driving contrary to section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 2004 (Act 683) as amended by Act 2008 Act 761 and causing damage by negligence contrary to section 72 of the Crimes Act 1960 Act 29.
The suspect, whose identity was not immediately known, was arraigned before a Kibi District Court where he was remanded in custody to allow time for further investigation.
His plea was not accepted when he appeared in court presided over by Peter Oppong-Boahen.
The prosecutor, Detective Inspector Kamal Salifu Gumah, prayed the court to remand the suspect in police custody as the investigation is still at its initial stage.
According to the prosecutor, the file will be forwarded to the Attorney General's Office for consideration after the investigation is completed for study and advice.
The court therefore took the suspect into police custody and adjourned the case to Wednesday, July 20.
Police preliminary investigations indicate that the 32-year-old driver of the semi-trailer RZ AS 4229 X was driving at high speed and decided to brake suddenly when he saw the vehicles in front of him slowing down.
While on board with his friend, the vehicle veered out of its lane into an MCE vehicle, resulting in his death and the death of his driver.
Meanwhile, the head of the Ekuona family in Sefwi Bekwai in the North West region, Nana Wireko Ampem, has mourned the sudden death of his nephew, Alfred Amoah.
According to him, the late MCE was the light of the family.
“The entire Bibiani and Bekwai communities have lost a great man. He was the light of our family. He called me yesterday and told me he was attending a meeting in Accra. I was there in the evening when the chairman of the JE party called me to inform me that my nephew had been involved in an accident and had died with his driver.
“I moved into his mother's residence and relocated her to avoid the shock she will suffer when she hears the news. But we have informed her this morning and she is sad,” he said, adding that the family would soon meet the leadership of the New Patriotic Party in the area to make the necessary funeral arrangements.
"He belongs to our family, but he was also a member of the NPP, so we are arranging a meeting to arrange a funeral," he added.
Also, the chairman of the New Patriotic Party in the area, Appiah Kubi, revealed that the driver who died with MCE in the accident is also another blow to the party.
According to him, "he is an experienced driver. I traveled with him and the late MCE on many occasions but I must say that what happened was unfortunate. We have informed his family of his death."
Meanwhile, mourners gathered outside the family home on Wednesday morning.
