Statistics from the National Traffic Safety Authority (NRSA) show that between January and June of this year, there were at least 1,300 fatalities in 7,687 recorded road accidents.
The reported collisions, in which 13,248 automobiles were involved, also resulted in injuries to another 7,997 persons in various degrees.
Additionally, according to the NRSA numbers provided to the Daily Graphic, 1,356 pedestrians were struck and killed during that time.
Comparing the mid-year numbers to the same period last year, when 8,188 recorded collisions resulted in 1,454 fatalities, there has been an improvement in the situation regarding road safety.
Similar to this, there were 2.3% fewer individuals injured in traffic accidents in the first half of this year than there were in 2021 (8,188 injuries). The 1,470 pedestrian knockdowns that were reported over the same period last year were also down 7.8% from this year.

But according to the statistics, there has been a decrease in the number of cars engaged in collisions, which went from 13,973 in the same time last year to 13,248 this year.
An improvement over last year, when the wrecks from January to June featured 4,948 commercial cars, 5,868 private vehicles, and 3,157 motorbikes, the incidents this year involved 4,619 commercial vehicles, 5,862 private vehicles, and 2,767 motorcycles.
Regional analysis
The Greater Accra Region has the worst regional statistics in the whole nation with 3,269 collisions and 252 fatalities during the first half of the year. The Ashanti Region came in second with 1,791 accidents, 247 fatalities, while the Eastern Region had 826 accidents, 238 fatalities.
Volta had 193 collisions and 55 fatalities, the Central Region had 529 crashes and 104 fatalities, Western had 354 crashes and 59 fatalities, Bono East had 102 crashes and 51 fatalities.
The Ahafo Region had 99 collisions and 48 fatalities, while Northern saw 94 crashes and 46 fatalities, Upper East saw 76 crashes and 38 fatalities, Bono saw 72 crashes and 28 fatalities, and Savannah saw 53 crashes and 22 fatalities.
With 51 collisions and 20 fatalities each, 35 crashes and 20 fatalities, and 26 crashes and 18 fatalities, respectively, the Upper West, North East, and Oti areas round out the leaderboard. More information
The numbers also showed a decrease in collisions, injuries, and fatalities in the Greater Accra, Western, Volta, Bono, Upper East, and Bono East areas in the first half of 2022.
Additionally, from January to June 2022, there were 5,883 collisions, 5,624 injuries, and 737 fatalities in Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern, the "big three" areas in terms of road crash data.
That accounted for 76.53 percent of the collisions, 70.33 percent of the injuries, and 57.69 percent of the fatalities noted during that time. In comparison to the same time in 2021, there was a modest decrease in collisions, injuries, and deaths for the major three areas.
This was demonstrated by the decreases in collisions, injuries, and deaths of 3.59%, 1.64%, and 15.68%, respectively.
In the first half of this year, there were 1,803 collisions, 2,373 injuries, and 563 fatalities in the remaining 13 areas.
In comparison to the same time in 2021, they also witnessed a drop in collisions of 13.53 percent, injuries of 10.62 percent, and fatalities of 2.93 percent.
Various dynamics
The number of male fatalities in road collisions was 1,034, significantly outnumbering the number of female fatalities, which was 266. According to the fatality figures, adults over the age of 18 made up 87% of fatalities, compared to minors, whose percentage was 13%.
