Teachers on strike submit to organized labor for all COLA-related engagements.

Unions representing pre-tertiary educators demand Organized Labor will guide the conversation.

Every discussion on the cost of living allowance (COLA) has been referred to Organized Labor by the striking teacher unions.

In previous talks with the administration, the instructors were unable to come to an agreement.

They have left these sessions in a huff, griping that the administration has never offered any solutions.

The teachers, like the majority of labor unions, are asking for a 20% allowance to help them cope with the current difficult economic climate.

But the teachers argued that moving ahead, all COLA-related discussions "should be brought to the Leadership of Organized Labor" in a letter to the sector ministers of education and employment and labor relations as well as the CEO of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).

The teacher unions are the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-G).

Since Monday, July 4, members have been on strike.

On July 14, organized labor will meet with the administration to discuss the requested allowance.

The Government's view on the strike

While talks with the administration are ongoing, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is pleading with the striking teachers to return to the classroom.

He advised educators to take into account the fact that junior high school third-year students will be writing the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in 2022. (JHS).

To support their demand for the Cost-of-Living Allowance, the four (4) unions in the education sector—the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana, the Ghana National Association of Teachers, the National Association of Graduate Teachers, and the TEWU—withdrew their services on Monday, July 4, 2022. (COLA).

Both teaching and non-teaching employees were involved in this.
