Pre-tertiary teacher unions have issued a new statement in response to the government's reluctance to grant their demand for a 20 percent Cost of Living Allowance (COLA), which prompted them to call for a strike for all teachers.

GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH claim that they have turned to the leadership of organized labor with their request for a COLA. A letter dated July 14, 2022, states:

"We write in reference to discussions we have had with the government.

It was decided during a meeting with organized labor's leadership that moving forward, any interactions regarding the demand for a COLA should be directed to organized labor's leadership.

The letter from the GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH leadership serves as a backdrop to the fruitless talks with the government. The teacher unions walked out of two previous meetings. In those sessions, the deputy minister of labor requested that the teacher unions end their strike so that negotiations could start. He cited the Ghanaian Constitution as requiring it.

In order to get them to end the strike before the negotiations, the teacher unions also claimed that the government had betrayed their confidence.

Therefore, the teacher unions believe it is wise to enable Organized Labour to bargain on their behalf as long as the strike is in effect.

Currentworldnews (through Opera News) developed and provided the content. A 20 percent increase in the cost of living (COLA) before CV has been demanded by unions such the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), TEWU, and Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana.

In response to a question on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show, the minister stated that the timing of the teachers' strike is really unfortunate.

He urged the striking teachers to negotiate with President Nana Akufo-Addo and return their working materials while also bringing up the detrimental effects of the conflict in the Ukraine and Russia and the COVID-19 pandemic on Ghana.

"What they're requesting is not inappropriate. They should receive better care, but if we are not vigilant, we can be acting morally correct at the wrong time.
