The government has failed to pay the 11 months' worth of unpaid allowance that the Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainee Association (GNMTA) owes its members, and the GNMTA is threatening to stage a large-scale protest in its place.

If the government does not settle its outstanding debts, the company claims it will also start an industrial action with regard to the clinical internships it must attend as part of its training requirement.

"Our demands have gone unmet for far too long. Our requests have been ignored for far too long, the association's president Adumbisa Paschal told the media.

The group claims that because of the unpaid allowance, the current economic hardship the nation is experiencing has a significant impact on them. As a result, the group is requesting that the government pay them before the end of July.

They also insisted that they deserved the allowance, and as a result, they gave the government until the end of July to pay off any outstanding debts; otherwise, they threatened to put down their tools and stage a protest.

The company also stated that it will fight any efforts made by the administration to revoke the permit it received in connection with Ghana's bid to obtain a bailout from the IMF (IMF).

Read something about the allowances

By restoring the country's midwife/nursing trainees' stipend, the administration has achieved another campaign promise.

In 2014, the former National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration abolished the grant, which guaranteed nursing students at least GH 450.00 per quarter.

However, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo pledged to reinstate the allowance for the trainees to go through a seamless training so they could serve the country during the 2016 election campaign.

At the official opening of the restoration ceremony in Sunyani, President Akufo-Addo declared that the government was dedicated to keeping every promise made during the 2016 election campaign.
