The University of Ghana's Legon Campus has welcomed a new chapter of the Ghana Institution of Geoscientists (GhIG).

This is a component of the institution's national leadership's goals to increase its visibility among the nation's student population.

The University of Ghana's Earth Science department hosted the inauguration event on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, with the intention of bringing attention to the chapter and formally introducing new members.

It was attended by well-known business people and eminent professors, mostly from the geoscience discipline.

Speaking to the audience, the ceremony's chairman, Prof. Patrick Sakyi, urged students to take advantage of the chance to sign up and join the Legon Chapter as student members while actively participating in all programmes. Prof. Daniel Kwadwo Asiedu, a former provost of the University of Ghana College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS) and the recently-past national president of GhIG, recommended students to make an effort to broaden their networks before finishing their studies.

He believes that achieving excellent marks through a diligent academic life falls short of fulfilling the goal of tertiary education.

In order to effectively negotiate the job market after graduation, he encourages students to develop partnerships with academics and business leaders.

Michael Aziriba Mba and Obed Tettey Armah, final-year undergraduate students, will serve as president and vice president, respectively, of the Legon Chapter of the Ghana Institution of Geoscientists.

Continuing students Mohammed Saudatu Samed, general secretary; Ayeh Douglas Okyere, public affairs officer; and Ansah Kenneth Delali, website officer are among the other executives who have been appointed to positions of authority.

Crisler Akwei Ankrah, the national general secretary, gave the executives their oaths of office and wished them a fruitful term.

The President, Aziriba Mba, thanked everyone for their trust in him during his acceptance address and promised to carry out the tasks given to the new executives.

"My administration will use symposium webinar services to discuss the goals of the Ghana Institution of Geoscientists. This prompts us to investigate the institution's advantages, welcome new members, and keep an eye on their geoscience-related activities.

As a result, there is a need to protect by reducing illegal and harmful actions that endanger humankind's ability to survive on planet Earth, he stated.

The aforementioned student leaders will be advised by Dr. Daniel Kwayisi, co-patron of the GhIG Legon Chapter, and Dr. Yvonne Loh, public affairs officer for GhIG.
