GHANA STANDARDS AUTHORITY TO CLAMP DOWN ON UNCERTIFIED PRODUCTS

According to representatives of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), the market for illicit goods would soon be cleared out.

This happened when the authorities launched a public awareness campaign in Kumasi's Central Business District and discovered some inferior items had crept into the market.

People found guilty would either pay a fine or go to jail, according to Samuel Kofi Frimpong, director of the Ghana Standards Authority-Middle Belt.

Workers from the Ghana Standards Authority's regional office went door-to-door in the central business district of Kumasi to inform businesspeople about their mission.

The Kejetia market and other trade centres within the commercial enclave were visited by the Authority, which also spoke with retailers that sell consumables and textiles there.

They educated sellers and purchasers to always look for the Authority certification symbol on products they buy.

According to GSA authorities, a sizable quantity of counterfeit products have entered the market, endangering the safety of the populace.

According to Mr. Samuel Kofi Frimpong, "the Authority embarks on sensitization initiatives to promote more awareness owing to the problem faced by Ghana's illiteracy rate."

Mr. Frimpong was concerned about individuals at Ghana's ports of entry who permit items that have not received certification to saturate the market.

"We have personnel at the border crossing who inspect imported goods. However, these locations do have some porosity.  We must ensure that products and services adhere to the Authority's criteria. But after conducting a recent market surveillance, we found that many of the items didn't have our conformance mark, he stated.

The Authority will pounce on such items, particularly in the Kejetia market, according to Mr. Frimpong.

He said that anyone found guilty will be subject to the full force of the law.

"L.I. 662 modified by 664 makes it plain that you must participate in the product certification programme if you are manufacturing in Ghana using an industrial method. Therefore, if you disobey the law, we are authorised by the law to present you in court for fines, imprisonment, or both, he added.
