David Adeleke, the Nigerian award-winning singer popularly known as Davido, is doing everything in his power to support his uncle, Senator Ademola Adeleke.
Davido has never hidden his love for his uncle as he has often gone out of his way to support him, particularly in his quest to become governor of Osun State.
Adeleke, who is a member of the People’s Democratic Party, will face three other big candidates today – incumbent Adegboyega Oyetola (All Progressives Congressman); Akin Ogunbiyi (Accord Party), and Lasun Yusuff (Labour Party) – for the coveted post.
For the past few days, Davido has been in Osun to ally with voters and urge them to vote for his uncle.
Recall that Adeleke had also flown the People’s Democratic Party flag in 2018 but narrowly lost to Oyetola after two rounds of voting.
Adeleke later went to court claiming his mandate had been stolen, but the Court of Appeal confirmed that Oyetola was the rightful winner of the election. Pained by the defeat, the singer wrote on his social media page: “My people, we cannot hide our disappointment at the Court of Appeal’s verdict. It hurts; it is extremely painful. But guess what? It’s not the end. Far from it. Everyone stay calm.”
In January 2022, Davido took his loyalty to his beloved uncle a step further when he asked the people of the state to shun his cousin Bamidele Adeleke and vote for his uncle. In a series of tweets, Davido criticized Bamidele as an “opportunist”.
In one of his posts, he wrote: “Wonderful! I graduated from university with a second-grade degree. But now it’s Cousin Dele who struggled to get even a second grade lower than “intellectual” educates. Intellectual who failed to build a single thing in his life himself. Eh, this life! Osun, beware of fakes!”
Ademola, affectionately dubbed “the dancing senator,” replied to Davido’s tweet: “Don’t worry nephew. God has us.”
Not done, the hip-hop star hit Bamidele again for writing about his late mother in an article. He wrote: ‘Because of your ambition you let your people write about me (which I don’t care about) but put my mother’s death in an article; the same woman who raised you. ok, dele God will reward you.”
When Ademola was announced as the winner of the PDP primaries in March 2022, Davido congratulated his uncle on social media and wrote “Imole”, “Imola, congratulations. Congratulations, Osun.”
However, as the elections approached, Davido practically moved to Osun State in solidarity with his uncle. On Thursday, July 14, the “Stand Strong” singer showed his spiritual side as he led a prayer session before the team left for a campaign rally.
Dressed in an agbada (flowing robe) with the inscription ‘Imole Lokan’, which means ‘It’s the turn of the light’, the singer was seen amidst a crowd of devotees. On his Instagram page, he wrote: “No intimidation, no violence. No withdrawal nor a repurchase.!!! Imole de!! #osunguber #2022 awa lokan.”
While Davido continued to support his beloved uncle, the opposition did not hold back either. Controversial street pop artist Habeeb Okikiola, aka Portable, was also on hand to support the governor.
In a post on social media, Portable showed a bag of cash shortly after meeting the governor. He previously said he was paid to support Bola Tinubu, the All-Progressive Congress’ presidential candidate. In a video that went viral, the ‘Zaazu’ singer said: “If they pay you money, you have to work. I was once paid to insult Tinubu during the protests. That’s a long time ago. Now APC said “Akoi Tinubu”.
“If they pay you, do your job; no tearing. When asked to insult Tinubu, I collected my money and did the job. Now Tinubu is next. They gave me money and I have to do the work for the money raised. Akoi APC.”
