According to rumours, Wayne Rooney, the new manager of DC United, is exploring a surprise transfer for one of Manchester United's underperforming talents.

The former manager of Derby County was hired as the team's head coach last week. He is making a comeback to the Major League Soccer team where he played for two seasons in his later years.

According to The Sun, Rooney has already turned his attention to making new signings and would like to reconcile with Phil Jones, a former teammate of his at Manchester United.

The manager of DC United has been linked to a number of illustrious figures, including free agency forward Luis Suarez, a former Barcelona and Liverpool star.

However, Rooney wants to sign players who have something to prove, and the 30-year-old Jones fits that description perfectly because he has had a very trying time at Old Trafford over the past few years.

The defender has only made six Premier League appearances since the start of the 2019–20 season due to a string of injuries.

When the club completes the acquisition of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax, he will drop even farther down the pecking order because successive United managers have not been able to depend on him.

Although Rooney wanted to loan Jones to Derby last season, he still has great faith in Jones' abilities as a player and wants to "rescue" him from his challenging circumstances at United.

Jones hoped to demonstrate that he still had a future at Old Trafford back then, but after being excluded from United's preseason tour of Asia and Australia, he is gradually accepting the truth that in order to restart his career, he will need to leave the team.

Jones still has one year left on his contract, but if Rooney can persuade him to leave to America, United won't stand in his way.

In reality, the Red Devils would be content to take his £100,000 per week salary off the table in exchange for only a small, if any, money from DC United.

Jones may not be the only ex-United teammate of Rooney's to move to Washington, as the former England striker has begun negotiating with Jesse Lingard about joining Major League Soccer.

Although Premier League clubs have made bids to the free agent, Lingard has welcomed the interest and might be persuaded by the chance to reunite with Rooney in America.
