How much sugar is in watermelon?

Most of the time, when you bite into a watermelon, you are greeted with a sweet but refreshing taste. If you have a sweet tooth, watermelon can be a healthier alternative to popsicles, but have you ever thought how much sugar is in a watermelon?

The amount of sugar you find in your serving of watermelon depends on its weight. If you think you've eaten about 85 grams of watermelon, you can count on having eaten 5.2 grams of sugar. 100 grams of watermelon contains about 7 grams of sugar. When we say sugar, the type of sugar found in watermelon is known as fructose.

Watermelon is often included in the diet of fitness fanatics due to its low calorie count and the fact that one bite contains:

 Vitamin A

 Vitamins B1 and B6

 Vitamin C

 Potassium

 Magnesium

 Fiber

 Calcium

 Lycopene

 Iron

 Sugar vs. Fructose

If you have landed on this page you may be wondering what is the difference between sugar and fructose. When the word "sugar" is used, it is an umbrella category for the three types of sweeteners that occur naturally or are added to foods. The three main types of sugar are sucrose, glucose and fructose.

The table sugar we are used to is a combination of glucose and fructose and is called sucrose. Refined sucrose can cause health problems when consumed in large amounts, leading to tooth decay, diabetes, blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and weight gain.

Glucose is what we know as the building blocks of carbohydrates. Glucose alone is less sweet than fructose and sucrose. While glucose is important because our bodies use it for energy, it's important to enjoy glucose in moderation.

The final type of sugar found in our beloved watermelon is fructose. Fructose is known as fruit sugar. This type of sugar occurs naturally in fruits, honey and tubers. Natural fructose is the healthiest form of sugar for the human body and also the sweetest.
