Tottenham could now choose 'superstar' ahead of Djed Spence after journalist's update - pundit

Frank McAvennie claims that Djed Spence will have to “fight for a place” in a Tottenham team now replete with “superstars.” Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said that Spence is by no means guaranteed a spot in Antonio Conte’s starting XI. Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Friday (15 July) that the 21-year-old has completed his medical and is set to sign a long-term contract with the London club. Middlesbrough are set to receive £12.5million plus add-ons for the England youth international, taking the total up to around £20million. The right-back has two years left on his contract with Middlesbrough after he joined the Championship club in 2020. He spent last season on loan with Nottingham Forest, helping them win promotion to the Premier League. When asked where Spence would fit into the Tottenham side, McAvennie told Football Insider: “He’s going into a team who are now getting a few superstars. “They’ve got a couple of stars coming in, there’s a couple of stars there. It’ll be interesting for him. “Going to a team like Tottenham now, you’re not guaranteed a place. And Conte will tell him that. “He will be in a position to go there and fight for a place, that’s all you can ask for from him.” Spence made 50 appearances for Middlesbrough across all competitions last season, including four appearances in their FA Cup campaign. During that time he scored three goals and provided five assists. Tottenham transfer news: Details emerge as Djed Spence deal finally agreed; medical booked in for Friday

Tottenham have finally agreed a deal to sign Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence, with the player set to undergo a medical and complete his move over the next 24 hours. Spurs and Boro have been locked in negotiations for weeks after the London club failed with initial offers of £10million and £11m for the player, but now a £12.5m switch has been agreed. That figure is expected to rise to £20m with add-ons as Tottenham close in on another summer deal. He is set to pen a five-year contract. Spence is set to join fellow new boys Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison and Clement Lenglet in north London. If the £20m figure is actually reached then Spence will become Boro’s biggest sale in their history. As for Spurs, Spence will compete with Matt Doherty and Emerson Royale for the right wing-back spot. That is unless the latter is offloaded back to Spain, as has been rumoured. There is little chance of Conte moving on from Doherty, given his ability to play right and left. That leaves Royal vulnerable, while Spence’s arrival lifts Spurs’ homegrown quota. Should he complete a deal over the next 24 hours, Spence will likely wait for the squad to return from South Korea before joining in with pre-season preparations. Tottenham are currently on tour in Asia and are due to play their next fixture against Sevilla on Saturday.
