For the first time in African history, Nigeria's incumbent Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has asked the US government and allies to consider President Muhammadu Buhari and his circle as a problematic administration where the welfare, freedom, security and justice for all Nigerians is not only a threat to Nigeria but to America itself and for the developed world.
This time last year, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Kukah, informed US lawmakers that insecurity, nepotism and persecution of Christians had worsened under President Buhari. The Buhari administration has continuously emotionally accused the bishop of hating his regime and using the pulpit for politics.
However, as acting governor, Ortom is now directly informing Western governments, including the Biden administration and the United Kingdom, that religious freedom and persecution of Nigerian Christians are at an all-time high under Buhari, a Muslim Fulani president.
The US government and the international community should decide to monitor Buhari and his circle because the widening food crisis, increased deaths of innocent citizens, wanton terrorism, politicization of religion and mass fear of the government could expose America to migration problems from Nigeria.
For too long, Buhari has been telling the western world that the herdsmen/farmers crisis is a cultural and traditional land dispute rather than a religious issue, but Ortom has strongly informed the western world that under Buhari, who is ethnically related to the Fulani herdsmen, the situation now appears to be a religious genocide .
Since America and Britain are historically Christian nations, Ortom, who speaks for vulnerable Christian farming and other communities across the country, tells the international community that they cannot continue to ignore the systematic killing of Christians in Nigeria.
And yet, Ortom seems to understand that under Buhari, a Fulani and Muslim man who still has a good number of months left in office cannot be ignored, knowing that he is reportedly not outspoken against the importation of religious violence into Nigeria.
The Western world could thus see more communities in disarray and Nigerians seeking refuge in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and displaced persons fleeing, risking migration beyond Nigeria.
The Buhari administration, known for its close ties to Turkey, Russia and China, states that enforce poor accountability for human rights abuses, should not be allowed to continue to act indifferent while violent attacks on communities in Benue State continue with alleged threats against Governor Ortom's life Fulani herdsmen.
There is no need for Biden or anyone else to pedal in Nigeria on human rights and security, as Ortom expresses, especially when religion-based violence is still rife.
While I wouldn't directly say that Ortom is blaming Buhari for causing unrest in Nigeria, the daily killings and suffering are too much for a nation in need.
Buhari, a man who is always on the move, traveling outside the country in times of emergency on the streets of Nigeria is a testament to his apparent indifference to human suffering and his apparent support for unmitigated violence, insecurity, poverty, corruption and human rights abuses.
Under the Buhari administration, widespread human rights abuses by government security agents and armed groups of Fulani Islamic origin in the north are the order of the day, and in the south, vulnerable Nigerians and state-sanctioned security networks are denied arms licenses to defend themselves against the armed groups. Islamic Fulani background.
The United States is especially proud to be the single largest donor of humanitarian, democracy and human rights aid worldwide, so it cannot ignore Buhari and his circle, as Ortom states, with Nigeria becoming increasingly dangerous to its people . , America and the International Community.
Buhari Presidency Instead of thinking out loud that the governor harbors hatred towards Buhari and his administration, it should find objective ways to correct the unjust social, economic and religious concerns across the country before the US government and its closest allies start making decisions. and a precisely guided view of Buhari as a leader and as a person.
Internationally, to ignore Ortom regarding Buhari on the principle of non-interference is to allow Nigeria to continue to drift towards destructive and very dangerous times.
